Loan Apps Without CRB Check in Kenya: What's True (2026)

Do loan apps without CRB check exist in Kenya? What licensed lenders publish about CRB reporting, fees and late charges, how to spot a fake 'no CRB' app, and what to do with a negative listing. Updated 27 September 2026.

By PesaMarket · Last updated 27 September 2026

Treat "no CRB check" as marketing. Licensed lenders in Kenya can send your repayment record to the three credit reference bureaus, and several say in writing that they report defaults: Safaricom's Fuliza terms, NCBA's M-Shwari key facts and Co-op Bank's MCo-op Cash page all do. What lenders don't publish is how much your CRB file weighs in their approval, so no one can honestly promise a loan "without CRB". Updated 27 September 2026; sources are listed at the end of this guide.

Are there loan apps without a CRB check in Kenya?

Updated 27 September 2026. Every figure on this page names its source and date. People search for loan apps without CRB check because a bank has already said no. We understand the need. But the honest answer is that the "no CRB check" label describes an advert, not a rule a licensed lender has to follow. Here's what is true. Since 14 April 2020, CBK has allowed only regulated lenders to send data to credit reference bureaus; it withdrew that approval from unregulated digital and credit-only lenders (CBK press release, 14 April 2020). Banks, microfinance banks and CBK-licensed digital credit providers are regulated. So an app you can trust is an app that can report you. Several lenders say so in their own documents: - Fuliza: default is reported to CRBs (Fuliza terms and conditions, clause 11.2.5, updated 1 July 2026). - M-Shwari: a loan still unpaid at 120 days leads to a negative CRB listing, after a 30-day notice (NCBA M-Shwari Key Facts Document, revised 8 March 2024). - MCo-op Cash salary loan: "If you don't repay the loan in 30 days? You will be listed with CRB." (Co-op Bank MCo-op Cash page, read 27 September 2026). What you won't find is the other half: none of the lender documents in our fact base says how heavily a CRB listing counts when the app decides whether to lend. That's why we don't rank apps by "CRB leniency". Any list that does is guessing.

What licensed loan apps publish: fees, late charges and licence

If you're comparing loan apps because of your CRB record, compare what they actually charge and what happens when you pay late. That's where a bad month turns into a listing. The table shows what each lender publishes itself, on its website, tariff guide or app-store listing, read on 27 September 2026. Licence details come from the CBK Directory of Digital Credit Providers (updated 9 July 2026, 252 lenders) and CBK's bank and microfinance bank directories. CBK doesn't publish licence numbers, so we give the legal name and the date licensed. Where a lender publishes nothing, the cell says "not published". Two lenders in our wider research, TruePesa and Haraka, have no live lender website or Kenyan Play Store listing that we could find, and we couldn't confirm a CBK licence under those names. They're left out.

How to spot a fake "no CRB check" loan app

Our view: an app that leads with "no CRB check" or "guaranteed approval" is telling you something about itself, and it isn't good news. A licensed lender has no reason to make that promise. Before you download anything: 1. Look up the lender's legal name in the CBK Directory of Digital Credit Providers (July 2026 edition, 252 lenders), or in CBK's bank and microfinance bank lists. The name on the Play Store listing should match. Our list of CBK-licensed lenders is at /en/blog/regulated-lenders-kenya. 2. Find the price in writing: an APR, a fee percentage or a tariff. Every lender in the table above publishes one somewhere. If an app shows the cost only after you've shared your contacts, walk away. 3. Check it against our scam list at /en/blog/scam-loan-apps-kenya-blacklist, or paste the app name into /en/scam-checker. Reading rates on PesaMarket doesn't send your ID or phone number to any lender or bureau. You can compare as many times as you like.

If you already have a negative CRB listing

Start by reading your file. Each of the three bureaus (TransUnion, Metropol and Creditinfo) owes you one free credit report a year under regulation 35(3) of the CRB Regulations 2013. Our step-by-step guide to checking all three is at /en/blog/how-to-check-crb-status-kenya-2026. Then sort the listing into one of three cases: - It's wrong. Dispute it with the bureau. Disputes are free at TransUnion and Creditinfo, according to their fee schedules. Under the 2020 CRB Regulations, which are under legal challenge, a lender that doesn't finish its investigation within 21 days loses the disputed entry; the 2013 Regulations gave 14 days. - It's for KSh 1,000 or less. Under the 2020 Regulations, which are under legal challenge, lenders may not send negative information for amounts that small (regulation 18(2)). Ask the bureau to remove it and cite that rule. - It's correct. Pay it. The account then shows as settled, and the regulations keep negative information for 5 years from the date you finish paying (regulation 33(1), 2013). Nobody can legally delete a correct listing for a fee. Our guide on removing a CRB listing is at /en/blog/how-to-remove-crb-blacklisting-kenya. While you sort it out, keep any new borrowing small and priced in writing. A late fee like Zenka's 1.5% a day or iPesa's published 2% a day can grow a small debt quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there loan apps without CRB check in Kenya?
Not in any way a lender puts in writing. Since April 2020 only regulated lenders may send data to CRBs (CBK press release, 14 April 2020), and lenders such as Fuliza, M-Shwari and Co-op Bank's MCo-op Cash publish that they report defaults. Lenders don't publish how much a CRB listing counts in their approval, so a "no CRB check" promise is marketing.
Do loan apps report to CRB in Kenya?
Licensed ones can, and several say they do. The Fuliza terms (clause 11.2.5, 1 July 2026) say default is reported to CRBs. The M-Shwari Key Facts Document (8 March 2024) lists a negative CRB listing at 120 days unpaid. Co-op Bank says an MCo-op Cash salary loan unpaid after 30 days leads to a CRB listing.
Can I get a loan with a negative CRB listing?
Lenders don't publish whether they approve people with a negative listing, so we can't name apps that will. What you can do: check your free report from each bureau, dispute anything wrong, and pay what is right. A settled listing stays for 5 years from the date you finish paying (CRB Regulations 2013, regulation 33(1)).
How do I know a loan app is licensed by CBK?
Find the lender's legal name in the CBK Directory of Digital Credit Providers (updated 9 July 2026, 252 lenders) or CBK's bank and microfinance bank directories. CBK does not publish licence numbers, so match the legal name and the date licensed, and check that the Play Store developer name matches.
