7 Ways to Save on M-Pesa Fees

🛒

Use Lipa na M-Pesa

Paying via Buy Goods (till number) is 100% free. Ask shops if they accept till payments instead of sending money.

📦

Send larger amounts at once

Sending KES 10,000 once costs KES 90. Sending KES 5,000 twice costs KES 78 x 2 = KES 156. Consolidate where possible.

✂️

Split big transactions

For very large withdrawals (above KES 35,000), splitting into smaller amounts can sometimes save on agent fees.

💳

Use M-Pesa app payments

M-Pesa app QR code payments are free. More merchants are accepting them, especially in Nairobi.

🏦

Go cashless

Agent and ATM withdrawals are the most expensive transactions. Reduce cash-outs by paying digitally.

📱

Send under KES 100 for free

Sending any amount between KES 1 and KES 100 to a registered user is completely free.

🏪

Agent beats ATM

Agent withdrawal fees are always lower than ATM fees for the same amount. Use agents when you need cash.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Lipa na M-Pesa (Buy Goods) free?

Yes. Paying via Lipa na M-Pesa Buy Goods till number is completely free for customers, regardless of the transaction amount. The merchant pays a small percentage fee (typically 0.5% or less). This is the cheapest way to pay with M-Pesa.

What is the M-Pesa daily transaction limit?

The daily transaction limit is KES 500,000. The maximum single send-money transaction is KES 150,000, and the maximum single withdrawal (agent or ATM) is also KES 150,000. Your M-Pesa account balance cannot exceed KES 500,000.

Do M-Pesa charges include excise duty?

Yes. All fees in the official Safaricom tariff already include the 20% excise duty imposed by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA). The amount shown is exactly what gets deducted from your M-Pesa balance — no hidden extras.

Can I send money to an unregistered user?

No. Since February 2024, Safaricom discontinued sending money to unregistered users as an anti-fraud measure. Both the sender and recipient must be registered on M-Pesa, Airtel Money, or T-Kash to transact.

Are charges the same for Airtel Money and T-Kash?

Yes. M-Pesa send money charges are harmonized across all mobile money networks in Kenya. Sending to an Airtel Money or Telkom T-Kash number costs exactly the same as sending to another Safaricom M-Pesa number.
