Updated 27 September 2026. Every figure below links to Tala's Google Play listing, Tala's FAQ or the Central Bank of Kenya directory.
Is a Tala loan worth it in 2026? Tala now sells a credit line, not a one-off 30-day loan. You apply once, get a limit of KSh 1,000 to KSh 50,000, and borrow against it for up to 120 days at 0.3% to 0.6% interest a day (Google Play listing, updated 17 September 2026). That works out to an APR of 109.5% to 219%, which Tala prints itself.
We rewrote this Tala loan review in September 2026. The old version quoted a "15% service fee", a 21 to 30 day term and limit-growth tables. None of those match what Tala publishes today, so they're gone.
Who lends: Tala's licence
Tala in Kenya is Inventure Mobile Limited, trading as Tala. It is a digital credit provider (DCP) licensed by the Central Bank of Kenya on 30 January 2023, according to the CBK Directory of Digital Credit Providers updated 9 July 2026. If you search the directory, search "Inventure", not "Tala".
Tala loan rates and fees in 2026
| Item | What Tala publishes | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Interest | 0.3% to 0.6% a day on the amount you borrow | Google Play, 17 Sep 2026 |
| APR | 109.5% to 219% | Google Play, 17 Sep 2026 |
| Other charges | "No access charges" | Google Play, 17 Sep 2026 |
| Credit limit | KSh 1,000 to KSh 50,000 | Google Play, 17 Sep 2026 |
| Term | Up to 120 days; you pick the repayment date | Google Play, 17 Sep 2026 |
| Late fee | A one-time late fee of 8% of the outstanding amount | Google Play; Tala FAQ |
Tala's own example: borrow KSh 10,000 at 0.3% a day for 120 days and you repay KSh 13,600, so KSh 3,600 in interest. At the top rate of 0.6%, the same loan would cost KSh 7,200 over 120 days (our arithmetic from the published rate).
Because interest is daily, repaying early costs less. The listing says you "only pay for days you need" and can pay in full or in part at any time before the due date. That's a real difference from flat-fee apps, where the fee is the same whether you repay in a week or a month.
Late is expensive in one step. The 8% late fee applies once to the outstanding balance, not every day. On a KSh 10,000 balance that's KSh 800 on top of the interest.
How to increase your Tala limit
Tala publishes one rule for growing your limit, and it's about repayment. The FAQ says "early and on time payments will help you qualify for larger loans in the future", and "repay your loan by the due date to maintain your relationship with Tala and grow your loan limits over time" (Tala FAQ, read 27 September 2026).
The Play listing adds that you keep access to cash "if you clear your outstanding balance and keep your Tala relationship in good standing (some exclusions apply)". Your limit tops out at KSh 50,000.
That's all Tala says. Here's what that means in practice:
- Repay on or before the due date. This is the only factor Tala names. Early payment counts too.
- Clear the balance before you borrow again. Continuous access depends on clearing what you owe.
- Avoid the late fee and a CRB report. A late payment costs 8% at once, and Tala's FAQ says long non-payment is reported to the credit reference bureaus.
What about the tips you'll see elsewhere: borrow only 60% of your limit, open the app daily, keep the phone charged, never uninstall, make 20 M-PESA transactions a month? Tala publishes none of them, and we found no source that tested them. We've cut them. The same goes for "KSh 3,000 after the third loan" style tables; Tala does not publish a starting limit or a schedule.
Tala's listing does claim that "most customers double limits in months". It gives no numbers behind that, so read it as marketing. We'd plan around the limit you have today.
How to apply and repay
The listing says any Kenyan resident citizen aged 18 or over with a valid ID and a mobile number can apply. You download the app, answer a few questions and get a credit offer; money goes to your M-PESA.
Tala says there is no auto-debit: you decide when to repay. You can pay with M-PESA Xpress or through Paybill 851900, using the phone number you signed up with (Google Play, 17 September 2026). Tala also says all amounts payable are shown before you accept the credit line, so check the total on that screen.
Tala vs other loan apps
Tala sits in the middle on price. Chapeo publishes a much lower APR (11% to 22%), and Zenka's published range goes from 30% to 4432%. For a full, sourced table of 12 apps, see our best loan apps in Kenya comparison. For Tala against its two closest rivals, see Tala vs Branch vs Zenka, and read our Branch review and Zenka review.
If you're on Safaricom and need the money for under a month, compare Tala with M-Shwari's 9% all-in, 30-day loan. Fuliza vs M-Shwari vs KCB M-PESA has those prices with sources.
Is Tala worth it?
For a short gap that you can repay in a few weeks, daily pricing works in your favour: KSh 5,000 for 14 days at 0.3% costs KSh 210. For a 120-day loan at the top rate, you'd pay 72% of what you borrowed. That's when Tala gets expensive.
My view: use Tala for short, planned borrowing and repay early. If you already have a CRB listing, check it first with our guide to what CRB is and how listing works, because a late Tala loan can add to it.
