Understanding Internet Technologies
FTTH (Fibre to the Home)
Fibre optic cable runs directly to your house. Most reliable with symmetric upload/download speeds. Offered by Safaricom, Faiba, Zuku, and Liquid.
5G Fixed Wireless
Uses 5G mobile network with a home router. No installation needed, plug and play. Offered by Safaricom and Airtel. Speeds depend on signal.
4G Fixed Wireless
Similar to 5G but on 4G networks. Slower but wider coverage. Offered by Telkom and Airtel. Good for areas without fibre.
HFC (Hybrid Fibre-Coaxial)
Fibre to the neighborhood, then coaxial cable to your home. Used by Zuku in some areas. Shared bandwidth means speeds can dip during peak hours.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cheapest home internet in Kenya?
Poa Internet offers the cheapest home WiFi at KES 1,575/month for 5Mbps unlimited data. For fibre specifically, Airtel 5G Smart Connect at KES 1,999/month for 15Mbps is the cheapest wireless option, while Zuku starts at KES 2,799/month for 10Mbps FTTH.
Which fibre provider has the best speeds in Kenya?
Safaricom Home and Faiba Home Plus both offer plans up to 1Gbps. Safaricom Platinum costs KES 20,000/month while Faiba 1Gbps costs KES 30,000/month. For value at speed, Faiba 90Mbps at KES 5,000/month with truly unlimited data (no FUP) is hard to beat.
What is a Fair Usage Policy (FUP)?
FUP means your speed gets throttled after using a certain amount of data. Safaricom Home has a 15TB FUP on all fibre plans. Faiba Home Plus has NO FUP at all, making it truly unlimited. Zuku also has no published FUP limits.
Is 5G home internet better than fibre in Kenya?
Fibre (FTTH) is generally more reliable with consistent speeds. 5G fixed wireless (Safaricom 5G WiFi, Airtel 5G Smart Connect) is easier to install (plug and play) but speeds depend on signal strength and network congestion. Fibre is better for heavy users; 5G is better if fibre coverage has not reached your area.
How do I check if fibre is available in my area?
Check coverage on each provider's website: Safaricom has a coverage checker at home.safaricom.co.ke, Faiba at faiba.com, and Zuku at zuku.co.ke. You can also call their customer service. Coverage is best in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, and Eldoret.
